Institutions that offer an associate degree in the science focus primarily on training people to work competently as nurses in a variety of environments. Prospective nursing students, however, cannot simply begin immediately in a nursing program. They must have a high school diploma or its equivalent. They must also complete some prerequisite courses and pass a critical exam before the nursing program will officially declare them as nursing students.
The nursing program itself typically lasts from one and a half to two years. This program focuses only on the techniques and knowledge necessary to functioning as a nurse. Besides spending time in classrooms or studying online, students also work in clinical environments as student nurses, often working alongside actual registered nurses and other health care professionals to determine their aptitude for the job.
After two to three years, students graduate with an associate degree. Then they take a state exam to verify their readiness to work in the various roles that a nurse must take. If they pass this exam, they can legally seek employment in their own state as a registered nurse.
Arizona Nursing Schools that Offer a Bachelor Degree
Many Arizona nursing schools try to steep their nursing students in a liberal arts education before allowing them to declare nursing as their major. In these schools, aspiring nurses take all the varied courses that other college students take, entering into nursing as their primary focus only in the last two years of a typically four-year stay in college. When they graduate, these students must take the same test as those with an associate degree in order to work as a nurse in Arizona. However, their title is officially a BSN, or a bachelor in the science of nursing. This is a four-year degree equal to any other usually available at a university.
Arizona Nursing Schools that Offer a Master Degree
At Arizona State University, they offer nurse candidates and those who are already registered nurses the opportunity to continue their education. This school awards master and doctoral degrees in nursing. This education also allows nurses to branch out into the newly available opportunities that they have to work in specialized roles. For instance, Arizona nursing schools train nurse anesthesiologists. This was once a role limited to medical doctors.
